    To all those who helped to bring about this sucess we are deeply grateful, but we owe our special thanks to the members of the Rebuilding Committee and the Plans Committee. The former has held over 318 and the latter over 202 meetings, since the work began. To Mr. A. E. Webb-Johnson in particular, a member of the first and Chairman of the second, is credit due for the splendid support he brought to us, and the years of almost daily labour he has given to our huge undertaking. We have, to mark our appreciation, broken with tradition and named a ward the “A. E. Webb-Johnson Ward” after a member of the Honorary Medical Staff during his tenure of office. When the year 1934 began we still needed over £200,000 to complete our scheme, and it looked as though we must face a long slow struggle to get into the last Hundred Thousand. When the autumn came we had close on 35,000 subscriptions to record, great and small, and the bricks and mortar contracts were covered. Here are some of the greater gifts of this year :— Mr. E. W. Meyerstein, £30,000 for the new Radio-Therapy Department. Mr. W. H. Collins, a further £10,000, to make £35,000, for the new X-Ray Diagnostic Department. Mr. E. W. Meyerstein, again, £70,000, to enable us to place the final contracts. Then came a host of smaller gifts. I cannot enumerate them all, but I do assure all our friends of my very deep gratitude to them. Then followed :— Lord Woolavington, a promise of £10,000 towards this final effort. The staff of “ The Times ” and the Times Book Club, £300 to provide a new Patients’ Library. Mr. S. A. Courtauld, £15,000 for a Clinical Research Unit, unique in this country and, we believe, an improvement upon those which we have studied on the Continent. Mr. E. W. Meyerstein, for the third time, with one splendid gift writing off the whole balance of the money required to com¬ plete the new Middlesex, £85,675. A swift complete success surpassing all expectations or even hopes, a wonderful end to the huge ten years’ scheme. And yet, I must warn you that much more is still expected of all of us. The bricks and mortar are paid for, and so is the very expensive plant of the two new Departments which Mr. Collins and Mr. Meyerstein have given to us. But there is the heavy cost of equipping and then of maintaining all the new accommodation which will soon become available.
