    Building and Extension Fund. The Contributory Scheme Carnival held in June proved a great success and cash totalling £1,551 7s. 6d. was allocated to this fund. In addition many friends of the Hospital entered into deeds of covenant for the payment of subscriptions to the account over a period of seven years. At the expiration of this period a total of /11,231 will have been received under covenant alone as a result of the Carnival. Your Board is grateful too, for the Huddersfield Corporation’s grant of ^1,500 and a donation of ^1,000 from “ An Old Resident.” It is with pleasure and confidence that your Board looks forward to increased help in liquidating the building fund debt to the general account. It must not be overlooked that the* provision of a New Maternity Unit will compel further outgoings from this fund. Private Patients’ Department. The Private Patients’ Department at Green Lea continues to prove its usefulness to those persons for whom the Scheme was intended. ^900 was transferred from the Private Patients’ Department account to the general account during the year, but once again your Board points out that no administrative or capital charges have been debited to the Department. 9 The following figures shew the work done Number of available beds Average number of patients resident daily ... The congratulations of your Board are again due and are unstintingly given to the Ladies who continue year by year to work with great enthusiasm on behalf of the patients. The articles supplied totalled 473, but, in addition to these the Ladies’ Committee has given a Dinner Trolley, a Toilet Trolley and a Sorbo Bed, as well as many items of comfort for the Patients. Your Board records its appreciation for those useful additions. To Mrs. Tinker and her helpers your Board extends grateful thanks. Once more the Egg Collection was organised entirely by them and the collection in 1938 totalled 54,427. This result is particularly pleasing in view of the low figure of 1937 which was due to circumstances which rendered ineffective to a large degree the efforts of the organisers. THE NURSING STAFF. Seven Nurses entered the Preliminary State Examination during 1938 and all passed. In the Final State Examination 31 entered and
