IN no refpeft is the fuperiority of the man. of fkill over the medical pretender fo clearly evinced, as his being able to foretell whether a difeafe will be of long or fhort duration; and whether it will end in com- pleat recovery, another difeafe, or in death. Frognofiic implies a proplietic fagacity, grounded on a muhplicity of circumftances compared with each other with philofophical accuracy, from which the phyfician weighs, as it were, in a balance, the probabilities for and againft the event he wifhes to inveftigate.
