    operations. The ivory is stained a rich sienna brown by the action of the mud, which causes it to look older than it probably is. The thickness is three thirty-seconds of an inch. The front bears the alphabet in sunk capitals, and on the back is incised a buzzard, or it may be intended for Cut 46. the falcon, which forms part of the arms of the Scriveners’ Company. The handle is ornamented on both sides with a double device, the upper representing rays of light, and the lower a star, the two divided by a border. It will be noted that while the bone horn-book engraved in cut \6a is a little larger than cut 48, the alphabets are not on so bold a scale.
