ORN-BOOKS came and departed with¬ out acclaim, and between their incoming and outgoing nations had long centuries wherein to wax lusty and decay. In days when human history was unwit¬ tingly written in the flints and potsherds which mother earth has so faithfully treasured for us, man’s earliest attempts at writing must have been signs and pictures drawn in the sand or roughly scratched on wood or stone. As time advanced, thoughts were more con¬ veniently impressed on the inner bark of trees, and later, on papyrus, and wooden, wax-covered folding tahiilce, “Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Still later, when papyrus was superseded by parchment and vellum, but in days far behind the invention of paper and printing, the horn-book was the happy thought of an overtaxed scribe, who, heartily detesting the profitless labour of I
