Horn-books have often been exhibited. At the Caxton Celebration Exhibition, 1877, the following horn-books were shown :— Exhibit No. 4214. Horn-book, time Charles I. Found at Ashley Green, Bucks. Lent by A. Smith-Dorrien (see p. 323). „ No. 4215. Horn-book, probably time James I. Lent by John Evans, D.C.L., F.R.S. (see p. 313)- „ No. 4216. Horn-book, II. Lent by Sir Charles Reed.' „ No, 4240. A nezv invented Horn-book. Lent by Sir Charles Reed (see p. 172). At the Exhibition of the Worshipful Company of Horners of London held at the Mansion House in London, in October 1882, efforts were made to obtain on loan as many horn-books as possible. The total number that could be gathered together was eight. A newspaper account gave the number as nine, but one of them was “ A Horn Book Cover of open work,” etc., and not, as reported, “ A Horn-Book, cover of open work,” etc. One paper said, “ The exhibition is rich in horn-books, there being some half-dozen specimens ; whereas, at the famous Caxton Exhibi¬ tion, only half that number were forthcoming.” The exhibits were cata¬ logued as follows :— Child^s Horn-Book, ante 1600, for teaching letters, the Paternoster, etc. Found in London, 1882 (cannot now be traced). A Horn-Book ; being the Alphabet, the Lord's Prayer, etc. Exhibited by John Evans, F.R.S., etc. (see p. 319). A Child's Horn-Book. Exhibited by William Gurney (cannot now be traced). Tivo Horn-Books. Exhibited by T. C. Noble (see p. 110). A Horn-Book. Exhibited by Miss Anne Jeaffreson, Brighton (see p. 49). A Horn-Book, large and perfect, with illustrated Alphabet. Exhibited by the Exors. of Sir Charles Reed (see p. 172). ^ Ihe catalogue entry is incorrect. This horn-book was lent by Mr. Robert White of Worksop and is that described on p. 323 and pictured in cut 131.
