THE Efteem I have always entertained for your Perfon and Abilities, and the Gratitude I owe you, require, before every thing, that I return you my humble and Sincere Thanks for all the Favors received of yon, during my Stay in London, when 1 had the Pleafure of attending your public LeBures, as well as of frequenting the Wefminfer Lying-in Hofpital, under your Direction; and alfo for the Honor you have done me Since my Abfence, by fending me your New invented Forceps with three Blades. I mud: confefs, Sir, when firft you Shewed me the Model of thefe Forceps, the Invention appeared more curious than materially ufeful: I confidered it as a complex Instrument, the Application of which, for that Reafon, might be liable to Difficulties. Thefe were my Sentiments when I received this Inftrument, and until I experienced it’s Utility, in two Cafes, where, I am fure, without the Affift- ance of the third Blade, it would have been impoffible for me to deliver the Mother. In the firft Cafe, the Patient was a healthy, ftrong young Woman, who on former Occaftons, had eafy Labours; yet, here it fo happened, that after the Difcharge of the Waters, the Child’s Head remained firmly wedged within the Pelvis. In this Situation the Woman had been in ftrong La- bour during three Days; and when I was called, on Enquiry, I found her Pains ceafed for near twenty-four Hours: She was extremely weak and exhaufted.
