Dr. Edmon- ‘stone in the account which he published of the disease, as it appeared in the regiment to which he was Surgeon, after its return to Eneland, first made the public acquainted with the fact of the disease being communicable. In an ac- count of the Egyptian ophthalmia, as it appeared in this country, printed in the early part of 1807, I first established that the communication of the disease was exclusively produced by the applica- tion of the discharge from the eyes of the dis- eased to those of the healthy. Although data similar to those which I then stated, and on which my conclusion was founded, have been repeated in some recent publications on the disease, very little has been added to explain the nature or determine the Jaws of this animal virus. The opinion, L believe, no longer exists, that the disease is communicated through the medium of the atmosphere or by sympathy. 1 may never- theless state, as a negative proof against the existence of any such powers, that during the whole time I have had the management of the ophthalmia hospitals, there never has been an in- stance of any medical officer contracting the dis- ease, although exposed to what might be sup- posed the greatest concentration of any contagion that can: emanate from the system in the worst Qa 2 |
