    {In the particular investigation of these diseases I shall deviate from what may appear the more natural order for discussing them, these observa- tions not being intended for the use of those who have had opportunities of rendering themselves masters of the progression of symptoms of which they treat, but to assist others in obtaining an easy apprehension of their appearances, when they first meet with them. As the destructive effects of ophthalmia are owing to the propagation of the disease to the sclerotic coat, these will be better understood when seen and considered independent of the conjunctival disease, the ex- cessive tumefaction and purulency of which is liable to distort the view, and give false appear- auces to the changes which belong more particu- larly to the presence of sclerotic inflammation.---. 1 shall, therefore, commence with the considera- tion of various changes which mark the progress of this deeper seated inflammation.
