About this work

Description

This film was made by a World War II veteran who managed to submerge traumatic war memories by throwing himself into his work. When deprived of this, the memories engulfed him. Ex-servicemen and their wives agree that stress from supresssed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases with age. PTSD was not generally recognized as a clinical condition until after the Gulf War. Until then it had been called nostalgia, cowardice, gas hysteria, trench hysteria and shell shock. Today, many World War II veterans still suffer from untreated PTSD. The aim of the film is to raise awareness of this common problem of ex-servicemen and to inform sufferers of the availability of appropriate, specialist psychiatric counselling.
