![w [ 10 ] St. John Ambulance Association. Over, 4,560 persons were trained and awarded certificates in various courses of the Association, against 2,930 in the preceding year. In addition 3,353 certificates were granted to school children in First Aid, Hygiene and sanitation against 2,374 io 1947. The number of Ambulance divisions at the close of the year was 37 (an increase of two over previous year), with a total strength of 1,004 members. The number of Nursing divisions was 0 (8 m the preceding year) with a total strength of 150 and that of cadet divisions of boys and girls was 00 (56 in 1947), with a membership of 1,411. First-aid posts were established at the Ardh Kumbh fair at Allahabad and the subsequent immersion ceromony of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes at Allahabad, besides other places, and did useful work. During the floods in Allahabad district members of Allahabad and Kanpur Corps visited affected areas with first-aid outfit, and assisted in evacuation and relief, and the distribution of medicines. CHAPTER XI Public Health Administration For lack of doctors it has not been possible to fill all-posts created in the previous year for control of epidemics, for mechanised units, malaria and Kala-Azar units. Measures to iucreate the supply of doctors by increasing the number of admission to the Medical Colleges have already been taken. A post of Assistant Director for the Hygiene Institute was created in view of increase in work of the institute. » .... i • ■ - * .. . - Budget grants. There has been increase in budget allotment under “Public Health” consistently with increase in activities. The revised grant for the year 1948-49 was Rs, 1,02,65,000 including the allotment for Public Health Engineering Section and grants for sanitary works. Actuals for the year 1947-48 were Rs. 91.80,042 against Rs. 70,16,988 for the year 1946-47. Allotment for the year 1949 50 is Rs. 1,11,86,300. CHAPTER XII Vaccination There are 444 towns in the United Provinces for purposes of recording vital sta¬ tistics, of which vaccination was compulsory in 249. Taking the figures for all towns 556,829 persons were vaccinated and revaccinated in 1948 against 407,334 in the preceding vear. In the rural areas 1,708,674 persons were vaccinated or revaccinated against 15,78 841 in 1947. Approximate number of Children under one year of age available for vaccination in the year 1948 was 213,801 in towns and 883,254 in rural districts, of whom 136,065 and 636,125 respectively or 63’64 and 72’02 per cent, were vaccinated. Number vaccinated in age group 1-5 year was 55,571 in towns and 349,853 in rural districts. Number of vaccinations performed in 1948 was 2,279, 527 (1,337,882 primary and 941.645 revaccinations) agaist 1,995,243 (1,33,9693 primary and 655,550 revaccinations) in 1947 Percentage of successful vaccination in which results were known was 98.22 for primary operation and 78.02 for revaccination- No case of encephalitis following vaccina¬ tions was reported. ., '»\ ) • J Government Vaeeine Depot. The amount of vaccine lymph manufactured was 2,83,235 grammes against 1,41,951 grammes in 1947.
