    PUBLIC CONVENIENCES There are 3 public convenience blocks in the Urban District, and whilst every endeavour is made to keep them clean and fit for the public to use they are never completely satisfactory due to the attention of hooligans etc. The conveniences are visited twice dailybut, although it is impossible to provide a full time attendant at each convenience, the cleanliness will never be up to standard expected by most people]until this is so. HOUSING No. of dwelling houses in the district 2,581 Number of new houses built during the year: (a) by the Local Authority 66 (b) by other owners 111 No. of houses in course of construction at the end of the year; (a) by the Local Authority (b) by Private Owners 37 IMPROVEMENT GRANTS The Housing Act 1969 became law in the latter part of the year. The full impact of this legislation had not had time to make itself felt by the end of the year, but in November, the Council resolved to make discretionary grants up to the permitted maximum of 3C^ of the approved cost of improvements ranking for grant. Increased grants for house improvements appeared to be attra-cting more attention and it is hoped that this will continue. No action was taken regarding general improvement areas. No Local Authority houses were improved. Discretionary Grants There were no applications received during the year. Standard Grants During year Total to date Number of separate houses for which grants have been made 21 218 Number of houses provided with (a) Bath or shower 19 (b) Wash hand basin 19 (c) Hot water supply 19 (d) Water Closet 18 (e) Foodstore 12 No clearance procedure was taken under the Housing Acts, although 32 inspections v/ere made during the year under the Housing Acts. FOOD Inspection of Food and Food Premises 16,813 animals v;ere inspected during the year by the Veterinary Inspector and 100% meat inspection wa.s maintained.
