![P R E E A C E» ^T^IIE following abridgment, with the remarks ac- JL companying it, firft appeared in fucceffive num- bers in the Kennebec Intelligencer for November 17 and 24, and December I, 8, and 15, 1798. It was conceived that advantage might refult from the whole being reprinted in the form of a pamphlet, to infure both its prcfervation and its circulation among new readers. The author has availed himfelf of this opportunity to make a few corrections and improvements. There was the more room for this, owing to the extreme hade of the firft publication, which was precipitated in order to put the American public into the earlieft poffible poffeffisn of fuch important materials. That the facls reflecting the ufe of cold water in certain difeafes, as detailed in thefe (beets, may feero applicable to the cafe of the inhabitants of the United States; the author cf this abridgment has judged it proper to cite the following evidence of fome eminent phyficians of America, on this fuhjeft.
