![Adverttfement agahft T a water confidered. r. From fome, I had the ac- counts of their cafes from their own mouths; and any one may be fatis- fied from the perfons themfelves, whofe names are mentioned ; and though others are, at-their defire, omitted, if any fhould be defirous ta know them, I (hall be ready, for their privaie fatisfaftion, to inform them. 6. Many cafes occurred of per- fons troubled with colds, coughs, difficulty of breathing, want of reft End appetite, which were foon re- moved by the ufe of Tarwater; but as thefe ailments might be re- moved by exercife, air, proper diet, or other medicines, without T?.r- water, I have omitted moft of thofe cafes, though the quicknds and cafe with which they were relieved, rnd the number of the cures, muft greatly recommend the ufe of this medicine. The inftances produced, therefore, are for the moft part rafes of the moft grievous and dan- gerous diftempers, acute and chro- j.ical ; fuch as the gout, king's evil, inveterate fcurvies, and ulcers, confirmed afthmai, fevers, pleuri- sies, rheumatifms, cholics, &c. v/liich rarely give way to any me- dicines ; but yielded to the power and efficacy of Tarwater, as will epptar by the fubfequent narrative. 7. I fhall beg leave, by way of introduction, to republifh the off- davits, and my remarks thereon, which gave the firft occafion of writing on this fubjeff, together \I ith fome obfervations pub],fil- ed in England, relating to thofe affidavits. 8. Remarks on a late advertife- ruent, and upon certain affida- vits mentioned therein, con- cerning the effectsof Tarwater in Stephens' hofpital. Q. The advertijement was pub- ljj&ed in ihc Dublin Journal, June 2, 1744, 'n tne fallowing words' '• We are very well informed that many 'voluntary affidavits have been made, before Alderman Walker, of the unfurcefiiul ufe ol Tarwater in Dr. Stephens' hofpital, by num- bers of patients in that houfe, fet- ting forth, that, after a long jeries of ufing Tarwater in the mojt Jlricl and regular manner, none found them- felves in any wife better, but many of them much worfe; and that thefe affidavits are in the hands of the vifitors of the hofpital, and ma/ at any time be viewed by the cu- rious in this matter. 10. Being furprized to hear that in Stephens' hofpital alone none found themfelves better, and many worfe, by the ufe of Tarwater, when at the fame tme great num- bers, both in town and country, had. received great and furpnzing bene* fit thereby; my regard to truth and the good of mankind induced me to make enquiry into the coin- tents of thofe affidavits, on which fo much ftrefs had been laid. 11. I accordingly addrtffid my- felf to the vifiting phyfician of the hofpital, who fhewed me the origi- nal affidavits, and declared the ad- vertifement was publifhed without hit knowledge. 12. I fhall here publifh one of the affidavits. and made oath, that he conftantly drank the Tarwater by the direc- tions of Dr. Lehunie, for about nine weeks, and depofed that he hath not found any benefit there- by.
