    (h) WaTER FURROW. 1 have reserved a special section for this possibly. greatest, yet the most avoidable, cause of malaria on a South African farm. In order to get it as near the house, and as high up as possible, the fall given to the furrow is too small, and this alone leads to stagnation. But when to this is added the fact that it is only cleaned, in too many instances, when it gets choked and the water refuses to run, it becomes a very death- trap. For it is among the little tufts of grass along the edges that the stagnating water stagnates still further and forms ideal breeding holes. A good and cheap type of house for malarial districts. Note careful attention to grounds in front. Verandah mosquito-proofed. in these circumstances the rule is—KEEP YOUR HOUSE, IN ALL POSSIBLY MALARIOUS SITUATIONS, AS FAR ABOVE THE FURROW AS YOU CONVENIENTLY CAN. HAVING DONE THIS, KEEP THE FURROW CLEANED AND TRIMMED. But in planning a new furrow give it as great a fall as possible and thus attempt to obviate the tendency to stagnation. A colleague of mine attends a family who live in an ideal situation. Yet member after member of the family went down with fever. The doctor drew the attention of the farmer to his water furrow, but the old gentleman resented the insinua- tion as a sort of personal insult. Another case occurred.
