PRICE THREE SHILLINGS 8c SIXPENCE. *** The Journal is addressed specially to those anxious to advance Psychological Science, to improve our knowledge of the Treatment of Insanity, and to promote the Amelioration of the Insane. THE JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGICAL MEDICINE AND MENTAL PATHOLOGY. EDITED BY FORBES WINSLOW, M.D. The Lancet. “ The first number of this journal elicited from ‘The Lancet’ (vol. i. 1848, p. 234) this remark, that in it there was ‘ no lack of materials, no deficiency of interest or instruction.’ On the publication of a third quarterly number, with further opportunities before us of estimating the capabilities and prospects of our new contemporary, we spoke in stiU stronger terms of approval of the mode in which it had been conducted, and of commendation to the notice of our readers, (‘ The Lancet,’ vol. ii. 1848, p 313.) There therefore remains now very little more to do than to announce the publication of the first annual volume, consisting of four quarterly numbers of the Journal of Psychological Medicine, in a very convenient and handsome form. It con¬ tains, under their respective headings, a series of elaborate analytical reviews, of original com¬ munications of interest and importance on subjects connected with mental diseases,—of trans¬ lations from foreign languages,—and of cases iHustrating various points in the law of insanity. No one can doubt the necessity of devoting a large share of attention to the investigation of cerebral diseases—a share beyond that which could be appropriated to their study in the pages of the journals which include the extended field of pathology at large; there therefore is abundant room for occupation by a journal such as the cne before us. This place could not have been better filled than it is at present, and there can be no doubt that Dr. Winslow’s successful labours will be suitably appreciated by all who take an interest in the pathology and treatment of diseases of the brain.” The Medical Times. ‘‘We have now before us the first volume of the Psychological Journal, to which we have great pleasure in directing the attention of all those who take an interest in the study of the vast and interesting field of mental phenomena. Many of the articles which it contains are of great value, whether analyzed as scientific or literary productions. It has also a charm, which is not always the distinguishing feature of quarterly periodicals,—it presents a feast of rich variety to the reader, and often with so much taste, elegance, and solid instruction, that in perusing its pages we are apt to forget we are in the depths of profound philosophical research, enjoying the luxury of clear and comprehensive views on matters of the greatest possible im¬ portance to the diversified interests and relations of humanity. Hitherto such subjects have generally been treated in a manner rather to repel than to attract. In this instance, the edge of the cup is not only sweetened, but the contents of it are often so happily blended, that there are few persons, whether learned or otherwise, but would take off the whole, not at a draught, but in small and repeated doses, and regret that the quantity had not been greater. A felicitous mixture of variety, displaying taste, learning, and accurate information, is certainly one of the characteristics of the journal, and ought, and we trust will, secure for it a deservedly wide circulation. It has a value, however, to which we have not yet aUuded. It is the first work of the kind published in this country, and opens up inquiries unquestionably amongst the most important that can engage the attention of man. . . . Dr. Forbes Winslow is a judi¬ cious and enterprising pioneer, and we extend to him and the whole of his class our sincere mite of approbation.” Tlie Medical Gazette. “ Dr. Winslow deserves great credit for the ability and perseverance which he has displayed in editing the Journal of Psychological Medicine ; and, we trust, from its regular appear¬ ance, that he is receiving that support which' his scientific labours deserve. There is no one of the numbers yet published which does not contain papers of great value in reference to mental pathology; and the articles on the medical jurisprudence of insanity are particularly deserving of perusal. We have reason to know that this journal is now consulted by lawyers on the sub¬ ject of homicidal insanity; and medical practitioners, who venture to give evidence on trials for murder, must be prepared for a close investigation into their acquaintance with modern medical doctrines.
