![FACTORIES. 234 visits were paid by the Sanitary' Inspector to premises to ascertain that, the provisions of the Factory Act, 1938, were being carried out from a health standpoint. More female labour is being employed and consequently alteration in the factories have been taken in hand to comply with the Welfare Regulations of the Act. HOUSING. No houses have been built in this town 'since shortly after the commencement of the war. The slum clearance programme was completed in 1939, 1,074 houses had been demolished and 4,498 displaced persons rehoused, mainly in houses erected by the local authority. We are still in need of a considerable number ol houses to replace insanitary houses that ought to be demolished, and to enable us to abate overcrowding. The influx of persons into this town due to the erection of new factories and the extension of existing works has caused considerable over¬ crow'd ing. INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD. SUMMARY FOR YEAR 1942. Milk Supply :— 145 Inspections were made of milkshops and shops where bottled milk is sold, and 40 visits paid to the one pasteurising plant within the town. 45 Inspections were made of 8 cowsheds within the town. 57 Samples of milk were submitted for Bacteriological Examina¬ tion.. 7 Samples of milk were found to contain Tubercle Bacilli, of these 6 samples were from cows kept on premises outside the borough and one from premises within this borough. Meat Supply :— 928 visits were paid by the Sanitary Inspector to the 2 slaughter¬ houses in Warrington. (Ministry of Food Controlled from January 15th, 1940.) From the 1st November, 1942, only Orford Green slaughter-house has been in use. 102 visits were paid to Butchers’ shops. 140 visits were paid to premises where Potted Meat, Sausages, Nc., are prepared. 43 visits were paid to the three Tripe Boiler premises. Condemned Food.—The following is a list of the food condemned at slaughter-houses, markets, wholesale and retailers premises, and in transit on the railways. The Ministry of Food require that no food considered unfit for human consumption shall be removed from the owner’s premises unless it has been seen and a certificate issued by the Sanitary Officer of the Local Authority :—Beef Carcases, 439 cwts.; - Beast Offal, 520 cwts.; Veal Carcases and Offal, 4] cwts.; Sheep Carcases and Offals, 10] cwts.; Pig Carcases and Offals, 184 cwts.; Imported Beef, Pork and Offal, 1] cwts.; Fish and Poultry-, 15 cwts.; Tinned Meat, Meat Paste, Milk, Fruit, Vegetables and Fish, 745 tins ; Porridge Meal, 2] cwts.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30235108_0015.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
