![THE BATHS OF SIDMOUTH, By a LONDON CONSULTANT. t HZ ] nPHE value of baths and other methods of using Hydro* water for the treatment of disease has been ^eiaP>* dimly appreciated since the earliest times. It was, however, reserved for Priessnitz, a small farmei of Graefenberg, in Silesia, to be the apostle of this form of cure. Soon after 1820, he commenced treat¬ ing almost every form of disease and complaint, both acute and chronic, on lines which modern science has christened hydro-therapeutic. He considered that all disease, of whatever nature, was due to an “ acrid humour ” in the blood, which could only be effectu¬ ally eliminated through the skin. To appreciate the value of his practice, it is not necessary to sub¬ scribe to his theories.
