    (NH^^COg, while precipitate of hydroxide, insoluble. NaoHP04, white aluminum phosphate, not soluble in acetic acid. Heated on charcoal strongly, moistened with cobalt nitrate, and re-heated, yields Thenard's blue. 16. Chromium, Cr = 52. Nearly white. Almost infusible. Nitric acid, no reaction. HCl dissolves it with evolution of as chromous chloride, CrCl,. Also dissolved by heat in HjSO^: evolved. Chief basic oxide is chromic oxide, Cr^Oj : bright green. Its salts are green, or reddish-violet. Its hydrate CrgHgOg, also green. Chromic chloride Cr2Clg,12H20, is green, and very soluble. The chief salt of chromic oxide is chrome-almu, K2Cr24 S04,24H20, in ruby-red octahedra: its solution is reddish-violet, with acid reaction. Tests for chromic salts. Na^COg, bluish grey-green basic carbonate. III. NH4CI + NH4OH, a dirty green gelatinous precipitate of hydroxide, CrgHeOe, soluble on boiling with excess of ammonia, with peach-blossom color. KOH, blue-green hydroxide, soluble in excess to emerald-green. On boiling, re-precipitated completely. Fused with NajCOj and KNO3, on platinum, yellow chromate is obtained. Borax-bead is colored green : so also is microcosmic salt. 17. Manganesium, Mn = 56. Manganic oxide, Mn^Oj, is blackish-brown. Found as the mineral braunite. Salts deep red, and decomposed by heat into salts of manganous (p. 27). In the rare manganese alum, K^MugiSO^ ,241120. 18. Glucinum or Beryllium, Be = 9. Silverwhite metal, malleable and ductile. Sp. gr. 2'1. Like alunhnimi, it dissolves in potassimii hydroxide. Melts at about 1000°. Dissolves in HCl to beryllium chloride, and H,. Its oxide, BeO, resembles MgO; its hydrate is white and gelatinous. Sodiimi carbonate precipitates BeCOg, white, soluble in great excess. Salts, acid. BeS04,7H20 ; BeCh.4H20. III. NH.CH NH.OH, white, gelatinous hydroxide, BeH^O^. KOH, white hydroxide, soluble in excess. Diluted and boiled, re- precipitated. (NH^)2C03, white carbonate, easily soluble in excess. (Al2HsOg, insoluble). (NH^)2S, white hydroxide. Group IV.—Metals of this group are precipitated by ammo- nium sulphide, (NH4)2S, in presence of ammonium chloride, as sulphides. Zinc, as sulphide .... ZnS, white. Manganous, as sulphide . . MnS, flesh-tinted. Ferrous, as sulphide Cobalt, as sulphide Nickel, as sulphide L'ranous, as sulph ide Uranic, as sulphide FeS, black. CoS, black. iM'iS, black. US, black. U^S^ ydlowish-brown.
