    PREFACE. I TO THE FIRST EDITION. It is proposed in this Treatise to introduce to the notice of the Profession a Theory and an Efficient Method of treating Inflammation of the Hip, Knee, and Ankle Joints. The application of this Theory by my method, (judging from the results, after many years experience and very frequent opportunities of trial in practice upon over one thousand cases,) is, I feel confident, a vast improvement on all the modes ef treatment hitherto practised in this department of Surgery. The means usually employed by Surgeons, in treating Inflammation of the Hip, Knee, and Ankle Joints, are frequently not followed by resolution, and it is no exaggeration to assert that the majority of cases are benefited with remaining defects.
