A case of suspected cysticercosis bovis infection is omitted from the section of the report on food. The carcase involved was put into the prescribed refrigeration but examination of the rejected part at the laboratory did not confirm the suspicion. The position was reviewed regarding the refuse tip at Longfield Hill, and the conclusion was formed that so long as the refuse was brought to the tip by rail transport compliance with the Council's byelaws was impossible. We were informed that the intentions of the Local Authority concerned were for their refuse to be transported to the tip by road as soon as arrangements could be made. About two years were needed to put these arrangements into effect. The urban parts of the district were considered with a view to establishing a smoke control area and a pilot survey was carried out by the Council's Public Health Inspector in Swanley. This was reported fully to the Public Health Committee in I96O and proposals were submitted to the Ministry for provisional approval, which was not obtained. Swimming can be of immense service to the citizen. Its value from the life-saving and life-preserving standpoint requires no emphasis. Apart from this aspect, swimming is possibly the best method of exercising every muscle of the body in the briefest time. In 1959 a proposal received favourable consideration by the Public Health Committee for the provision of a swimming pool. However, progress towards its materialisation has been slow and opinion on its value is evenly divided, the opposition being based on the cost and size of the scheme. This is not merely a question of revenue and expenditure, this part of the rural district is barren of any healthy outlet for youthful energy and school children have to travel far for swimming facilities. The National Assistance Act, 1948> empowered local authorities to deal expeditiously with certain cases of persons in need of care and attention by applying to the Court of Summary Jurisdiction for a removal order. Since the Act came into operation we have investigated the circumstances of 26 persons said to be in need of care and attention with a view to applying to the Court for a removal order where necessary. In 5 cases action to obtain such an order has been initiated but only in 1 case has an actual order of the Court been obtained and used for the purposes of removal to a hospital or other
