    Infantile Mortality. 92 children died under one year, i.e.-— 124’49 deaths per 1000 births registered 46 deaths, or 50% of the total occurred in the East Ward, Prematurity and Diarrhoea being the chief causes. The Returns of the Registrar General for 75 provincial towns for 1904 are also given :— Birth rate ... 29*6 Death rate ... 17.5 Zymotic death rate, 2*65 Infantile ,, „ 166 deaths to every 100 births registered. DISEASE INCIDENCE. Small Pox. Three cases occurred in Westwood St. during the month of April, imported by a patient from the London Hos¬ pital ; careful enquiries and revaccination of all known contacts, prevented any further spread of the outbreak. As an additional precaution the clothes worn by the patients during their stay in the Small Pox Hospital were all burnt, and compensation for the loss paid by the Corporation. I regard this detail as most essential, it being almost impossible by hot air disinfection to remove the in¬ fection from thick woollen clothes, which have been worn con¬ tinuously for weeks. Five notices of contacts from other towns were received during the year, in every instance they were at once visited, recommended to be revaccinated, and kept under obser¬ vation for 16 days without any further developments.
