The plant referred to is Shepherd's Purse (Capsella Bursa Pastoris) : but Sangtdnaria is more properly applied to knot-grass (Polygonum aviculare). E. P. N. p. 32, 'Pilogontes et sanguinaria, ^sit is unfortredde.' 2 E. P. N. p. 46, 'Haslula regia, muge de bois, wuderove.' See ante, Asta regia. With regard to woodruff there seems to be some difficulty. It is hard to see how it came to be called Haslula regia Perhaps the confusion maybe due to the fact that the YyenchMuguet was applied both to tvood- r«#and the Ldy ofthe Valley (Gerarde, p. 386). Both are scented, but only the latter could be appropnately Called Hastula regia. In that case the reason of tlie name would probably be found m the shape of the leaf: cf. the name gar-lic (A. S. gar, a spear). The name woodrtcffi^ p.obably a translation oiAsperula (the little rough one): at any rate, the name looodrowell (Gerarde p 1126) suggestmg Fr. rouelle, is very much later than the name ivuderofe (E, P. N. p. 12). which occurs in a vocabulary of the tenth century. Nemnich gives as the Dutch name for Woodmff, Welriekend ^«««.*r«,rf : and as rurnu is the word for rough, the inference is that the Dutch Ruuwh-uid ^ni the Enghsh „,oorfr„jf derive their name from the roughness of the plant. Herba Walteri seems to l name Wald-meister. = Herb Robert. Gerarde, p. 939, ' it is called m High Dutch Ruprecht s hraut. . . and thereupon it is named in Latine . . .
