YH is the vitreous humour, and the dotted line round one side of the lens and through YH represents a mem¬ brane which indicates an embryonic continuation of the central artery of the retina passing through O N, the optic nerve connected with the brain. 0 X is the optic axis of the lens. The optical apparatus is complicated by the fact that the various refractive indices of each part of it vary.
