![ALPERTUS, [Monk of Metz.] See Migne, Patr. Lat. Vol. 140, See Monumenta Ger. Hist.—Script. Tom. IV. ALPHABET OF MARY, Duchess of Burgundy. A series of 24 beautiful drawings of the letters of the Alphabet from A to Z, executed in pen and ink, and supposed to be by the hand of Mary, Duchess of Burgundy. Each of the drawings forms the first letter of a sentence or proverb written in French ; beneath the sentence at- tached to the letter Z are the words. Per me mariam, forming part of the decoration, and below, by another hand, “A Dam‘® Marie de Bourgongne 1460.” On the opposite page, facing the letter Z, is a very beautiful drawing of the Duchess of Burgundy. Above the portrait, to the left, is written, “ Marie ducesse de Bourgongne 1460.” Bound in 4to, in calf, with the sides of the original i ^th century binding inlaid. The original sides of the binding of this remarkable volume are very valuable specimens of the block binding of the period, the obverse representing X\\q Annuncia- tion, and the reverse The Mass of St. Gregory.
