![FROM THE SECRETARY OF WAR, COMMUNICATING, In obedience to law, information in relation to quarantine on the Southern and Grulf coasts. December 9, 1872.—Referred to the Committee on Commerce and ordered to be printed. War Department, December 6, 1872. The Secretary of War has the honor to transmit to the United States Senate and House of Representatives, in compliance with the require- ments of a joint resolution, approved June 6, 1872, providing for a more efficient system of quarantine on the Southern and Gulf coasts, the in- closed copy of the report of Assistant-Surgeon Harvey E. Brown, United States Army, who was detailed to make the investigations called for. WM. W. BELKNAP, Secretary of War. Washington, December 2, 1872. Sir : I have the honor herewith to present a report of the work per- formed by me, in obedience to Special Orders No. 139, current series, from the War Department, of which the following is a copy: [Special Orders No. 139.—Extract.] War Department, Adjutant-General’s Office. Washington, June 17, '1872. On the recommendation of the Surgeon-General, Assistant Surgeon Harvey E. Brown is hereby detailed to make the inspections and reports required under the joint resolution of Congress approved June 6, 1872, ‘‘providing for a more effective system of quarantine on the Southern and Gulf coasts,” and will proceed, via New York City, to Norfolk, Virginia; thence to such other towns or ports on the Atlantic coast as may be comprised in the said resolution ; thence to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he will take his station, and make the necessary visits and inspection on the Gulf coast. On the 1st of November next he will return to this city and make his report to the Secre- tary of War, through the Surgeon-General. ******* By order of the Secretary of War : E. D.
