On the firft of May 1782, a maiden lady about forty years of age, and of a very corpulent habit of body, was feized with cold (hiverings, fuccecded by much fever, and an eryfipelas in her face. A very fenhblc apothecary, who firll faw her, fent her a purging potion, an aperi- ent glyfter, and fome alkaline draughts, with a grain of camphor, to be taken with lemon juice in the a& of cffervefcence, which were to be repeated every four hours. The next day the purging potion was again ordered. I faw her on the third, and found her in a flate of deli- rium, with great drowlinefs, fubfultus tendinum, attended with naufea, a very quick pulfe, and the face much fwelled and livid. I directed her an aperient apofem with nitre, to be taken occa- fionally ; and a bolus, compofcd of ten grains of mufk and ten grains of the cordial confe&ion, to be repeated every five or fix hours.
