    THE EPIDEMIC PUERPERAL FEVER OF EDINBURGH. tNTRODUCTION AND HISTORY OF THE DISEASE. From the most remote periods, long before the daAvn of civilization, the real or supposed sufferings of females during child-bearing, and their interesting situation afterwards, justly procured for them a greater share of indulgence and attention than were granted to the sex under other circmnstances. In the Mosaic law, we find that women after delivery were commanded to withdi-aw fi-om society altogether for a certain period; and whether from religious or other motives, tliis ex- emption from their domestic concerns must have been beneficial in restoring their own powers, and allowing them to dedicate their time unmolested to the care of their tender offspring.* * Levit., chap. xii. ver. 4, 3.
