    PREFACE. To trace the connection of the diseases preva- lent in particular situations, as well as of their various changes and fluctuations, with the state of the seasons, soil, and other physical influ- ences, has ever been an object of zealous pur- suit among physicians; and has, in fact, occu- pied the attention of most of the active improvers of our art from Hippocrates downwards. ‘To our distinguished countryman Sydenham we are much indebted for the luminous details which he has transmitted to us, of the varying ‘epidemic constitutions” of the seasons, in this metropolis, at the interesting period during which he was an assiduous and extensive ob- server. Butitis to be regretted, that down to the middle of the past century,—that is, during one half of the period which has since elapsed,—no ~ distinct record of the epidemic seasons, or of the predominant diseases, has been left us by any physician.
