![ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHIEF PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTOR FOR THE YEAR 1971 SECTION C Staff Mrs. P. Pearce left the clerical staff during March and her place was taken by Mrs. K. Edwards. Sanitary Circumstances of the Area Water Supplies The Lee Valley Water Company's monthly reports on samples taken throughout the district, indicate that 642 bacteriological samples and 30 chemical samples all proved to be satisfactory. The Water Company also reports as follows - (a) The water supply of the area has been satisfactory (i) in quality and (ii) in quantity. (b) 21 chemical and 252 bacteriological examinations of raw water were made. 30 of the latter contained E.Coli. The bacteriological quality of raw water samples is shown in the appended table (Table 1). With reference to treated water, you will have received the monthly reports from the Chief Chemist and Bacteriologist. The fluoride content of the various supplies within the Rural District of Hitchin is invariably recorded as less than 0.2 parts per million. (c) The waters are not liable to have plumbo solvent action. (d) No positive coliform samples of treated water. No action had to be taken. (e) The number of dwelling houses supplied is shown on the attached schedule (Table 2). It is not possible to give separate figures for those properties supplied direct from the mains and those supplied by means of standpipes. (f) The estimated population supplied is 24,211.
