    PREFACE The general part of the Preface to vol. iii of the Summary Catalogue holds good for the present volume, which contains the collections acquired in the first half of the 19th century (from 1801 to 1850, inclusive). In all, twenty-three collections have been dealt with, con- taining 7,661 MSS., and the preparation has occupied three and a half years. Vol. iii contained twenty collectidns or 7,959 MSS., acquired in 1698-1700, and its preparation occupied rather more than three and a half years. As before, in the place of the general Index, which will be issued in due course, a short account of the contents of the book, grouped under a few general subject-headings, is offered as a temporary substitute of a rough and ready kind. Some alterations in the pressmarks and numeration of the D’Orville and Gough collections have been introduced since the MSS. were catalogued b I. Bibles and Liturgies. Greek and Latin bibles will be found in the E. D. Clarke collection, and Latin in D’Orville and Douce; and the English translation by Wycliff in nos. 17681, 21814, 21839, 21944-5. There is a large number of liturgical MSS. in the MSS. Canonici liturg. and (distin- guished for their illuminations) throughout Douce : see also nos. 16923 (Moissac psalter), 17091-2, 18326-44, 18391-2. 2. Theology. Some patristic theology is found in the classical collections, and in Douce: there is an 8th century copy of Primasius on the Apocalypse in no. 21714, and an iith century Legendae Sanctorum in 21748, cf. 17404; but minor theology is not common. Two MSS. of the Speculum Humanae Salvationis which may be regarded as precursors of the early Block books are in nos. 21778, 22002. 16924 is a 12th century MS. of Decretals and Canons. These alterations have been duly entered in the final proofs of this volume. E.W. B. N.]
