    the parasympathetic system. There are other points in nomenclature which may be mentioned here. The terms vertebral and prevertebral ganglia do not seem to me satisfactory. The cervical ganglia are prevertebral in mammals and vertebral in other vertebrates, so that the terms suggest their homology with the ganglia of the abdominal viscera in the mammal, and with the ganglia of the lower part of the chain in other vertebrates. It is frequently necessary to describe the state of a tissue after the postganglionic fibres running to it have been cut, or the ganglion supplying it with nerve fibres has been excised, and time has been allowed for degeneration of the cut fibres. The operation is conveniently described as a degenerative section. I use the terms paralysis of a nerve, as it is usually used, to signify that stimulation of the nerve has no effect, and not that the excitability or conductivity of the nerve has been abolished. The terminology expressing the point of action of a chemical substance varies with different writers. The following is, I think, the most convenient. The point of action is: the end apparatus, when it is not desired to specify anything further than that the action is at the periphery and can be set in action by the nerve, the nerve ending, in its usual significance of an action on the terminal branches of the nerve, the myo-neural, or neuro-celhdar junction when it is held that there is continuity between nerve and cell, and that the action is on a partly nervous, partly muscle substance at the junction, the neural region when it is held that the action is on
