    from histological observations and those drawn from experiments for the most part disappeared as further experiments were made on the effect of stimulating the spinal nerves at their origin. (These experiments will be considered later under the headings of the “ sympathetic ” and of “antidromic action.”) There was still the possibility that the experimental method was not sufficiently delicate to detect the trifling effect which would be produced if a few fibres ran from the spinal cord to the sympathetic by way of the grey rami. Evidence on this point I obtained by the degeneration method (1896). On cutting the lumbar and sacral nerves inside the vertebral canal, either no small medullated fibres were found in the grey rami, or a few were found which there was good reason to believe arose from white rami or were afferent fibres. The function of the small nerve fibres in the anterior roots of the nerves which have no white rami remains to be determined. The origin of the preganglionic fibres from the spinal cord may then be diagrammatically represented as in Fig. 1. Fig. 1. Tectal Bulbar Thoracico-lumbar Sacral The general plan of the peripheral connexion of the several parts of the autonomic nervous system is, as has been said above, that the thoracico-lumbar or sympathetic system supplies nerve fibres to all regions of the body, whilst the tectal, the bulbar and the sacral systems supply nerve fibres to special regions only.
