They confided of two coats, or 'layers, and were perfectly fpherical, neither ad¬ hering to any fack, nor were they united to each other. Some of them appeared of an amber colour, and the coats of thefe were thicker. Upon open¬ ing them, their internal coats were ftudded with fmaller, or young, ones, about the fize of a pin’s head. Some of the water in which thefe final! ones floated, was examined by the microfcope, and found to contain a quantity of minute hydatids fwimming in it. When once an hydatid has found its nefl, the further progrefs of this fpecies of vermes appears to depend on its own laws. It ex¬ pands itfelf, and is pregnant with a young brood : at length they iflue forth, and the parent animal lofes its exiflence, and fhrinks into a fubftance re- fembling ifmglafs. Hydatids of this kind, viz. round tranfparent bags, like fmall white grapes, have been difcharged from various parts of the body, by vomit and ftool; (Phil. Trans, vol. xxii. page 1797 ;) from the breafl by coughing ; (Med. Trans, vol. ii. page 486;) from the bladder by urine, and from tumors in different parts of the body. (Phil. Trans, vol. xv. page 2344.) Hydatids of this defcription, Dr Adams denominates hyda- tis lymphatica ; and when their contents are tinged with red blood, he terms them hydatis cruente. Hydatids
