'The death rate, jier 1,000 head of ])opidation, was 10.2, an increase on last year, when the rate was 10.7 per 1,000. The number of infants \i ho died before reaching the age of one year was six, making an infantile death rate of 82.1 per 1,000 birtlis, a slight increase on last Ariar, wlien the number of infantile deaths was h, out of ()4 births, the rate lieiiig 78.1. Of these 0 infants, 4 died of premature birth and an- other of pneumonia. Neither of these infants was illegitimate. Of the other 00 deatlis, 20 were of persons over 00 years of age, 17 of whom were over 70, and of these 4 were over 80 years of age. Six deatlis were caused by cancer, 0 by heart disiaise, 4 b\' ])ulmonary tuberculosis, 4 by bronchitis, 0 by pneumonia, and 1 b}' influenza. Coleford has the liighest death rate in bronchitis in the Oloucester- shire area, its average being 1.70. In pneumonia it comes third. 1 am pleased to state that although the epidemic of measles was A^ry seA’ere, we escaped without a death. In past years the deaths from measles has raised the death rate considerably. INFECTIOUS DISEASES. Tlie number of cases of Infectious Diseases Avhich occurred during the vear Avas d9 more than double the number of last year. The increase in these infectious cases was due to scarlet fcA'Cr, of wliich there has been an epidemic preA^alent in tins neighbourhood an.d in Soutli Olonrnouthshire, 24 notifications of this disease reported. 44iese cases of scarlet fever did not occur in any cular locality, but were spread generally over the whole District. 'There were five cases of diphtheria, fcair of wliich occurred in ]\Iilk- wall and the other in Hank Street. ITie four cases of diphtheria, witli numerous others outside our District, were contracted at JDh wood School. The cases of jilithisis, of which there were five, Avere scattered over the District. Dour of these cases have ended fatally. 44ie five cases of typhoid all occurred in laird’s Hill, and were confijied to tAvo houses closely contiguous, nearly at the to]) of the hill.
