    (2) Many persons who hitherto have lived in comfortable circumstances and who normally would have made their own arrangements for institutional treatment and paid for it, have been compelled, owing to loss of position, to seek assistance from the County Council. (3) An effect of unemployment is to make a patient, recommended for institutional treatment, much more ready to avail himself of the offer than would be the case were he engaged in a remunerative occupation. (4) The need for economy is having the effect of causing voluntary hospitals to approach the County Council more frequently than formerly with a view to assistance in the maintenance of tuberculous patients in these hospitals. (5) The weather during the later months of the year was not unduly severe and no protracted spells of intense cold occurred. The open-air conditions at sanatoria, therefore, appealed more favourably to patients than is usually the case during the winter months. The County Council possess two sanatoria for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, one at Harefield and one at South Mimms. Cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis are sent to institutions approved by the Ministry of Health, but not under the control of the County Council. The following statement shows the total number of beds belonging to, or reserved for the sole use of, the Council during 1931 Accommodation. Institution. Adults. Type of case. Children. M. F. Throughout the year Harefield and Clare Hall sanatoria have been kept very full.
