Upwards of 50 full-page woodcuts. rst edition of these famous ‘macaronic’ poems, interesting for the history of the language and life of Northern Italy. There is no doubt that Rabelais was influenced by this work, which was translated into French. Fine copy, com- plete with the marginal notes, which are nearly always cut into, and’extra leaves at end. The woodcuts are most interesting and are probably the work ofa local artist. On the front covers are pasted ‘vellum slips containing in large. red letters the original press marks of the library of Georgenthal Abbey and, completely covering the panels of the backs, are paper labels giving” the contents in full ofthe volumes; a peculiarity. of binding which we have never seen before. ‘198 and 210 leaves. A superb monument of the earliest German printing in the finest possi- ble state of preservation with contemporary in- scription dated 1472, being a note of the price paid for the book by the Abbey and coat of arms on margin of the first page.’ Numerous, fine decorative pen initials in red and blue which’ show a marked similarity to the printed initials, found in Schoeffer’s famous Psalter, and many lesser initials in red and blue. The first leaf of vol. II. in excellent facsimile. Specimens of Schoeffer’s press in fine contemporary state as the present, are becoming increasingly difficult. to secure.
