    from causes dependent on the condition of this important centre of nervous sympathies. In the light of the above statements, an im- portant fact is clearly apparent. If it be a func- tion of the physician to develop and diffuse a knowledge of the causes of diseases of this class, the failure to fulfil] this duty is signal and com- plete. In some future time such a service may be regarded, as it certainly is, the highest and most inrportant of his calling. Preventive knowl- edge and preventive measures are here of much more consequence than in the instances of in- fectious diseases, in which the law provides salu- tary regulations, because the cases are more numerous, and the aggregate of suffering greater. The development, popularization, and diffusion of facts bearing on this subject must inevitably result in the diminution of these affections, if not in their entire prevention, as serious and pro- longed diseases. It is to these comprehensive and unquestionably important ends that my ef- forts in the present work are directed.
