    TO THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTORS OF SCOTLAND. Gentlemen,— In exercising your choice of Members for a new Parliament, we beg to address you on the subject of Vivisection, and would respectfully urge you to consider how far any man who upholds that practice is daserving of your suffrage. It is not unlikely that some of you may know little about Vivisection. Let us, therefore, submit answers to a few simple questions relative thereto. I. What is Vivisection ? It is cutting up animals alive, and otherwise subjecting them to excruciating torture, in ways often too horrible to be des- cribed, in the hope of learning facts which the experimenters think cannot be so well found out by any other means, and which they say may be of use in treating the diseases of man. II. Is not chloroform used in performing the experiments ? ‘And does not the Act of 1876 restrain all the worst cruelties of Vivisection? In some cases chloroform cannot be used. In many others it is not used. The animals are often kept for days, and even weeks, in extreme agony, till death ends their sufferings. The Vivisection Act, put in plain English, amounts to this: Any licenced experimenter can practically experiment to any extent, on any animal, without Anaesthetics.
