Not, however, defiling to force my new edition upon any one, I was always willing that the fourth volume fhould be fold feparately, and with that view I took care that the fourth volume Ihould be printed in greater number than the others had been; many copies have accordingly been fold feparately, and I have now defired it to be publicly adver- tifed, that any perfon may purchafe the fourth volume by itfelf *. So far in an- * Dr. Cullen never meant to publilh the fourth volume feparately; he fold the property of the whole work under a condition not to do it; he exprefsly fays in page 8, that it •wouldbe a piece of knavery be fhould never pracJife. Mr. Creech, in page 12, proves, that he never intended it; to this day [July 8th] the fourth volume is not to be had fepa- rate in London ; and Mr. Creech, by a pointed letter which follows, puts the Doftor's real intentions refpetting this matter out of doubt. With what face therefore can the au- thor afTert,that he was always willing that the fourth volume Jhould be had feparate ? 1 am forry to fay, that this is a mere affertion, and void of truth. The \tb volume, I am told, does not conned with the firft edition of the third, which, were there no other evidence, is a fufficient proof of itfelf that it was never meant for feparate publication ; and he is now compelled to print a new edition of the fourth, with alte- rations to remedy this inconvenience. But he does it with a heavy heart, becaufe it will fubjedl him to an unforefeen drawback, and is an aft of juftice he bad never imagined he fh,ould be obliged to perform. C 3 fwer
