(Eng.), U-R.C.P.(Lond,), D PEPE Borough Medical Officer of Health and School Medical Officer: In 1900, of the 262,627 men and women and children living in West Ham, 5,156 died. The death rate that year worked out at 19.6 per 1,000. Last year there were 318,500: people living in West Bain 55°873 more than in 1g00. And only 3,428 of them died. In 25 years the death rate in the Borough has been reduced from 19.6 to 10.7—it has been practically halved, although the population has been greatly increased. There, in those dry-as-dust figures, lies the romance of the Borough’s Health Services. It is the story of an un- ceasing effort to make life in a densely populated industrial afea as pleasant and safe as in the most attractive health resort. It is the story of an intelligent community’s willing response to that effort in time, money, care and labour ex- pended on its behalf. It is a serial story that gets better and better as each yearly instalment is unfolded. MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE. ~The Health Services of West Ham are like a fairy god- mother who carefully follows the destinies of her god- child from the cradle to the grave. In fact, this fairy god-mother begins to act even before the cradle stage is reached, for a new Ante-natal and Infant Welfare Clinic will shortly be opened in West Ham Lane, where any expectant West Ham mother can consult a specially trained lady doctor in respect of any condition which may be troubling her. Indeed, any woman in the Borough about to become a mother is urged to attend there, even if she considers herself quite normal.
