![ied SUB-NORMAL CHILD N THE preceding monograph, which dealt with i the normal child, a definition was given of normality. The substance of that definition was that, for our present purpose, a child may be regarded as normal which has hereditary tenden- cies that harmonize it to an average degree, physi- cally, mentally, and morally with the average or normal environment of civilization. It follows, obviously enough, that we shall re- gard the subnormal child as one that lacks the he- reditary equipment giving it such average har- mony with its environment. It will appear presently, however, that we are not to confine attention exclusively to hereditary defects. Many a child of perfectly good heredity is distinctly sub- normal at five or six years of age because of de- fects in its infantile and childhood environment.
