As to their special beneficial effect upon the manifestations of the: gouty diathesis, it is far from having been de¬ monstrated.’’ Much discrimination is, however, required ton determine the cases of gout in which the Yichy, springs are likely to be of advantage, and several writers have adverted to the ill consequences: resulting from their having been employed in, improper cases or from their abuse. I have already . quoted the opinion of MM. Trousseau and Pidoux * on this point. “There are cases,” says anothers writer on mineral waters, “ where from the abuses of the waters of Yichy, or from other improper s treatment—as by purgatives—regular gout is con- - verted into the atonic and abnormal forms. Them; spasm is replaced by atony, inflammation by serous in pufB.ness, and edema or dropsy, amounting tos complete cachexy, may ensue.” * “ In all the as-* thenic forms of acute and chronic gout,” says M., Durand-Fardel,“ Yichy is counter-indicated.”t Dr. * Dr. Astrie, “ La Medication Snlfurense. ” Paris, 1852.
