![PHYSICAL EDUCATION Report tor the year ended 31st December, 1965 The Organisers, employed jointly with the East Suffolk Com- mittee, gave a similar proportion of their time to the affairs of the County Borough as in former years, namely, Mr. Stott 1 /5th, Miss Avles 3/lOths, and Mr. Newborn 1 /5th. Schools were visited as frequently as lime permitted and assistance was given to teachers on all aspects of the schemes of physical education within the individual schools. Help was also given on the equipment and apparatus necessary to carry on the work and it is encouraging to find the schools enjoying increasing]} better facilities, particularly perhaps, indoors. The Playing Field position still offered problems but this was understandable and is not a position which can change rapidly although there was an improvement in the range of facilities at some of the fields. The increase in out-of-school physical activities, both educa- tional and recreational, continued to increase and although encouraging in so many ways does, nevertheless, cause some concern to those faithful adherents to the more traditional games and sports. The wider spread of activities does not always have the desired effect of bringing in more participants and leaders but places a still heavier burden on a comparatively few teachers dealing with very much the same group of children. The Proposed Refresher Course for teachers in Junior schools was held and by repetition in the months of March, May and June it was possible to provide for all teachers having responsibility for the physical education of junior children. Demonstrations were given and films shown. It was felt to be a successful follow on to the Infant course of the previous year. The secondary school teachers had opportunities to participate in specialised training and coaching sessions held in the area under arrangements made in conjunction with voluntary bodies of sport. Games Tournaments were held and attended by the Primary Schools with much enthusiasm and evident skill. These tournaments create tremendous interest and are excellent introductions to the games of the secondary schools which follow later. The school staffs, many of whom help with P.E., whether under the direction of a specialist P.E. teacher or not, gave praise- worthy service in maintaining a volume of opportunities to the children and for this they deserve much credit.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29496305_0145.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
