See Spt- wa Alba. ; | Behen, there is a confiderable difference among the Authors con- cerning the Roots of Behen, but moft probably are the Roots of white and red Valerian. Belenoides, the Procefs or. fhoot- ing forth of a Bone, called Alifor- mis, made like a Wing, which is fixed in the Bafis of the Scull. Belladonna, {leeping Night-fhade. Bellis, Bellis flos & Herba Mar- gavita, a Plant bearing Flowers, growing in the Meadows ; a Daify. There 1s fome difference among Writers, about the Temperament of this Plant : Some fay it is hot and _ dry; others fay it is cold and moift 5 but its fharp tafte argues Frigidity, and the Effects of its Siccity ; both _ the greater and the lefler Dai/y, are excellent Wound Herbs. Women ufually give the Herb and Flower to Children, to loofen their Bellies. The Roots are ufed outwardly, with very good Succefs, in the Kings-evil. Benediéta Herba. See €ariophyl- lata, Benignus Morbus, a favourable Difeafe, is that which has no dread- ful Symptoms, but fuch as are con- fonant to its nature. Benjamin, or Bengoin, a well-fcen- ted yellow Rofin, of divers Pieces and Colours, dropt from a tall Tree - to Bontius, it is a Plant or Shrub like the Salfa parilla, growing in Fava; out of the Rind of which, po ae © Mr. Grimm fays, it is a beautiful Tree of a middle fize, growing in the Weft of Sumatra. The Fruit is of the bignefs of a Hafel-nut, en- clofed in a Shell like Walnuts, fome- what hairy ; the Leaves being pale on the upper, and dark-green on the under-fide. The Kerne! taftes bitterifh. When the Tree is 5 or 6 Years old, they make an Incifion at length in the Wood, whence if- fues a white, glutinow, aad tranf parent Liguor; which being coa- gulated in the Sun, produces a yel- low and white Gum, very wel! {cen- ted, and not unlike Frankincenfe. Berberis, the fame Tree with the Oxyacantha, the Barberry-tree , the berries coo], and are Aftringent ; they provoke Appetite, and flreng- then the Stomach, and therefore the Conferve of them is frequently ufed in Fevers, in a Loofnets, and the bloody Flux. The inwa:d Bark of the Branches, and Root, infufed in White-wine, is an excellent Re- medy for the Jaundice. The Juice of the Berries, a Decottion of the Bark, or the Juice of the Leaves mixed with Vinegar; cure the Pain of the Teeth occafioned by Fluxion; the Conierve of it frequently taken gargled, with fome of the Conferve diffolved in Vinegar. ey Berriberi, a fort-of Cow’s Lip.
