LORD LISTER CASES 19, 20, 21 BrP AY Le GOODALL To attempt to summarise the work of Joseph Lister is no easy feat. His was the type of genius which is almost incomprehensible to lesser mortals and he was the type of man who spared no effort in using his wonderful gifts for the service of his fellow men. His published work consists of 136 articles in numerous scientific journals, an output which could only be sustained by his habit of rising at 5.30 a.m. Lister was born on 5th April, 1827, at Upton House, West Ham. His father, Joseph Jackson Lister, was a remarkable man, who while a wine merchant found time to add considerably to our knowledge of optics and perfected the microscope. Lister’s mother, Isabella Harris, had been a schoolmistress and no doubt helped considerably in the development of his genius. He was born a member of the Society of Friends. At an early age, Joseph Lister decided to become a surgeon and began his studies in University College in 1844. He graduated B.A. a 1647, and M.B., F.R.C.S. in 1852. In 1853 he proceeded to Edinburgh for a short visit but, coming under the influence of James Syme, he remained there and married Syme’s daughter, Agnes, in 1856.
