These are the letters written by Cowper’s friend, John Newton, over a space of 35 years, to his wife. The first volume covers the period when he was at sea, engaged in the slave trade, & the second his later life at Liverpool, Olney, & London. An interesting copy, for it bears the following inscription: “‘ To the Revd. Samuel Crowther, a token of affection and respect from the Author. The present play is dedicated by its anony- mous author to Samuel Whitbread, who was chair- man of the committee for rebuilding Drury Lane, which was opened in 1812, & it was Whitbread who suggested this adaptation.
