If it be objected that the touch is not always neceffary to thefe effects, it may be replied, that the imagination may be fuf- ficiently fertile in refources to produce them all by its foie inflrumentality ; efpe- cially the imagination exerted in a public procefs, called into play at once by the methods in which it is itfelf addreffed, and by the effects obferved in thofe who furround it. It has been already feen what were its effects,in the experiments made by the commiffioners upon ifolated fubjedls ; it may eafily be conceived in what degree thofe effedls muft be multiplied in the cafe of a number of patients collected together in a public procefs. Thefe patients are affemhled in a narrow fpace, if the fpace be compared with the number of patients i the air of the apartment is heated, although care be employed to renew it j and it is always more or lefs impregnated with mephitic gas, which has the property of adling immediately upon the head and the nervous fyftem. When the introduc-r tion of mufic is added, it affords another means of ad:ing upo<i and exciting the nerves.
