    [ 22 | 1495 AD. AUGUSTIS, Quiricuws DE (XIV. cent.). Lumen Apothecariorum cum certis expositionibus noviter impressum. Gothic Letter, double columns of 65 lines. Fine woodcut initial, white on black ground, at beginning; initial spaces, with guide-letters, elsewhere. Venice, Joannes et Gregorius de Gregoriis, 22 September, 1495. Folio. Bound up with Nos. 23 and 25 during the XVth century in wooden boards covered with richly stamped brown leather. (See Reproduction of binding, Plate No. II). Collation: a-e° fg*; [*?]=4o leaves, 19-38 so numbered. Hain *2120. Pellechet 1597. Proctor 4546. British Museum, Cat. Incun., Nahai VaeD. 347. Quiricus de Augustis of Tortona was physician at Vercelli and wrote this pharmacopoeia in the early part of the fourteenth century. It is import- ant for the medieval history of remedies. Not only the proper pharma- ceutic words are mentioned in this book, but also the preparation of sugar and sweet-meats. The word marzapanum for marzipan is used for the first time in this work. Inscribed ‘ Nzcolaus Pol Doctor. 1494,’ by Dr. Pol inside front cover. The original shelf letter C along the tail edges. _No copy in U.S.A. (according to Census).
