This colossal work was produced at the presses of Jean Trechsel, a cele- brated printer and publisher at Lyons; the present copy was bound up in three volumes in its present stout bindings shortly after publication. The vast commentations surrounding the text represent almost twenty years work by the famous physician Jacques Despars, who was attached success- ively to the persons of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Charles VII, King of France. The original manuscript with the annotations in Despars’ own hand is still in the library of the Faculty of Medicine at Paris, where Despars bequeathed it.
